eXpertGenealogy Professional listing since May 2005

Native Danish Researcher w. 25+ years experience in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish Research

Qualifications:

I am a native Dane now living in Utah. I have done Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic) research for clients for the last 28 years, and have a great working knowledge of records available from these 5 countries.

I obtained accreditation in Danish research through the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1982 and in Swedish research in 1986. The accreditation program was discontinued by the Family History Library in 2000, but is now taken over by the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen), and I am on their list of Accredited Genealogists.

I have traveled and done research for clients on location in many archives throughout Denmark, from the small local archive through the Regional Archives and to the National Archives in Copenhagen.

I have previously been employed by the Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and worked in the Scandinavian Reference Area of the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City for several years. I then transferred from the Reference Unit into the Collection Development Unit of the Family History Library and worked there for another couple of years helping to identify records, which needed to be obtained either by micro-filming or by purchase to develop the Scandinavian/European collection.

I have traveled throughout the State of Utah as well as out of state and done seminars on Danish and Swedish research.

I have located obscure records in Denmark and compiled and published books with some of this little known material and thereby made it available to the greater public.

Services:

I am a professional genealogist specializing in Scandinavian (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish) research.

Most of my research is done at the world famous genealogical library maintained by the Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Family History Library is the largest genealogical library in the world. The heart of the library's collection is approximately two million rolls of microfilmed records and more than 500,000 microfiche. The collection includes records kept by governments, churches of many denominations, other organizations, and individuals. These records include copies of church registers, census records, passenger lists, military records, land and probate records, just to mention a few. The library has a substantial collection of records for many areas of the world.

It is a lot more efficient to do Scandinavian research in Salt Lake City than in the Scandinavian archives because you have access to the microfilms from 8:00 AM until 9:00 PM, while for example in Denmark you are lucky if you can get more than 5-6 hours of effective research done during the daily business hours of the archive. Another reason it is more efficient is that you do not have to travel from one regional archive to another because all the records are in one location.

I do go on research trips to Denmark.

I also do genealogical seminars on Danish and Swedish research.

I do short one time projects as well as larger ongoing research projects. No project is too small or too large.

I do research for individuals and for large family organizations.

Searches and projects will be tailored to your specifications.

Fees:

The fee for complete genealogical research, record searching, and consultation is $50.00 (U.S.) per hour for short projects, plus expenses**, due in advance. For larger projects (10 hours +) I charge $45.00 (U.S.) per hour. A minimum retainer of $100.00 (U.S.) is required for a short search, $450.00 (U.S.) for extended research.

**Expenses include costs of copies of records if you want these; fees paid to agents to search records not available locally; field travel (auto, meals, lodging), [no additional charges for travel in Salt Lake City & Metropolitan area]; fees paid to courthouses, repositories, and other record facilities; administrative costs for items such as postage and supplies.

Please contact me regarding costs for on-site research and genealogical seminars.
